Eddie Kramer typically used an M160 up close, and a U67 out in the room. One thing you should look at is trying to emulate the mic placement, which may tame some of the spit.

I find I back off the input volume considerably on any amp sim. It's pretty spitty in comparison, which is kind of my impression of Amplitube. The tone is ballpark, but isn't all that close to the original. Just my opinion, your's can be different. They don't clean-up the same when you back your guitar down. I have not tried them all but the ones I did use did not have the girth or smooth tone of the real amps and speakers. Personally I've never cared for any of the IK imitations. He sounded great, at age 72 he still had it going on. I recently watched him in concert from the 4th row, he was constantly moving between neck, in-between and middle pickups with none of that thin out of phase sound. Robin Trower describes the pickups on his signature Strat and they are not from a single tone set, neck is vintage, center is Texas Special, bridge is modern although he says he never uses it, no mention about phase of center pickup but his tone does not have that "pingy" thin phase canceled tone when he uses that in-between position. With the center pickup in-phase with the neck it's a completely different tone. I have an American Vintage '59 with the non-OOP middle, and the in between sounds are noticeable improved.slight volume boost, and thicker sound than a setup with OOP middle pickup.Joe, you are right, so few people note that. There was no noise cancelation when combining the middle and bridge, but also, the tone has rounder highs, and is not so scooped in the midrange. One thing that is overlooked regarding Hendrix's tone is that back then, the middle pickup was not wound out of phase.
